Cybersecurity for Small Businesses: An 8-Point Checklist

You do not need a huge budget to reduce risk; you need to review the basics in an orderly way. This eight-point list shows where your company stands.

The eight controls

  1. Tested backups. They exist, they are stored off-site and someone has restored a test copy.
  2. Two-factor authentication on email, banking and business systems.
  3. Unique passwords kept in a password manager, not in spreadsheets or messages.
  4. Updates up to date on computers, router, firewall and systems.
  5. One account per person and immediate removal when someone leaves the company.
  6. A separate network for guests, cameras and office equipment.
  7. Short training to spot fake emails; most incidents start there.
  8. A plan for when something fails: who to call, what to shut down and how to recover.

Where to start

If you can only do two things this week, turn on two-factor authentication for email and check that your backups can actually be restored. They prevent the most damage for the least effort.

When to ask for help

If you cannot answer one of the eight points, or if your operation depends on networks, servers or equipment you cannot afford to lose, a review is worth it. At IT-Connected we work on networks, firewalls, backups, physical security and the road to ISO 27001. Learn about our cybersecurity service.
